Automotive

Automotive is not just about cars. It includes anything on wheels: cars, tractors, excavators, combine harvesters, wheelchairs, trains, lawnmowers – you name it.

Develco has been working with automotive designs since the very start of the company in 1989. Over the years we have been involved in a wide range of automotive tasks, reflecting the diverse purposes and working environments of vehicles.

Choosing the Right Solution

At Develco we can offer you advice on choosing the right solution. As we do not have any preference for any particular technology, we are able to offer you a perfectly objective evaluation of the technology most suitable for your specific set-up. We are familiar with literally any brand and type of components used for automotive designs, assuring optimum price/performance ratios.

Power Supply

An area of special interest within automotive designs is the power supply. Power planning and budgeting is of great importance, and the design must take great care to ensure uninterrupted functionality when starting the engine.

Measures must be taken to make it possible to survive faulty situations such as battery disconnection while the generator is still running (“load dump”). Power consumption when the engine is not running is also of major importance in many situations. The battery is easily drained if the power is not managed carefully.

Batteries

Generally, the lifetime of acid batteries is of prime importance. That is especially the case when the vehicle is powered solely by batteries, e.g. an electric wheelchair. At Develco we have considerable knowledge regarding charging and discharging batteries properly, to ensure enhanced battery lifetime.

On Board Diagnostics (OBD)

OBD is widely used in automotive applications, reporting the status of external sensors back to the central motor controller or car computer. OBD is normally implemented as a combination of HW and SW.

Harsh Environments

In most automotive products, electronic circuits face life in a harsh environment. Often exposed to shifting temperatures, sometimes in wet and dirty surroundings, measures must be taken to make them survive for years. At Develco we are familiar with temperatures ranging from –40 to +125 ºC and protection classes as high as IP69K.

Design

Professional design of appliances includes physical appearance. If placed on the outside, the surface must be rugged yet easy to clean. If placed on the inside, safety against accidents (i.e. no sharp corners etc.) is the most important consideration. At Develco we strongly believe that appearance and ease of use are important issues as well.

Canbus

Interconnection of different equipment is a hot topic. Canbus is the most popular transmission standard used. The Canbus can be separate, with a proprietary protocol running on top, or it can use a widespread standard.

Accreditation

In automotive design, accreditation is of great importance. In many cases our customers have their own test standards against which our designs are proven. Otherwise Develco can help find the appropriate standards to be used.

Quality Assurance

Develco was ISO9001:2000 approved in 2005. Furthermore, we are familiar with QS9000, TS16949, E/e-marking and other international standards.

Develco has extensive experience with automotive products that meet the requirements of the the RoHS directive.
