05-02-2009 Smart Energy Products Enters the Market

ZigBee based metering solutions have now penetrated the market for Automated Meter Reading. The ZigBee standard features several different profiles, of which the Smart Energy profile has turned out to be a secure and easy-to-use solution for utilities intending to help their customers manage energy.

As one of the first companies in the world, Develco can now present Smart Energy Meters, based on a platform from Freescale. In Denmark, the market development in the fields of AMR (Automated Meter Reading) and Home Automation is right now accelerating dramatically, and it comes as no surprise that is a Danish company introducing actual Smart Energy meters which are already brought onto the market.

Smart Energy gives utilities and their customers the power to directly communicate with thermostats and other smart appliances. The ZigBee Alliance's quarterly member meeting to be held in Dublin mid-February will this time expand with ZigBee Smart Energy Forum on the 13 February 2009. For this event, leaders in the European Energy Industry have been invited to confront a number of major issues and problems, such as rapid growth in the demand for electricity, inability to effectively manage peak demand, volatile gas and oil prices, ever-increasing energy efficiency goals and the need to substantially reduce carbon emissions.

At the forum, Develco will demonstrate data collection from several types of metering devices (water, gas, heating and electricity). In the system, meters from different brands are able to communicate. Hence, meters from e.g. Kamstrup, Elster, POWRtec and Develco Products are included in the solution. An In-premise Display Device is able to receive pricing information from utilities and this way, facilitate energy management during peak hours and the like.

Europe faces a rising awareness of the impact of energy consumption on the environment, and the climate summit, COP15, held in Copenhagen in December 2009, will treat this issue profoundly. ZigBee Smart Energy is emerging globally as one of the important technologies being used to meet these challenges and lay the foundation for the Smart Grid of the 21st century using a solution based on a widely available open standard.
